Updates!

Greetings ME/DT109!!

I just wanted to make a few announcements before the huge overflow of
updates that is bound to follow after:-

1. Summative 1 results

Will be released this ....
Friday,
2 April 2010. The exact time is still yet to be informed,
so please be on standby for that. For some this is exciting news and
for others this is probably a shock that results are going to be released
so soon. Either way, take it easy because it is just a small fish, the bigger
more important fish is still to come. Regardless, I wish you all the very best in yr results!

2. Batch Blog

I want to revamp this good ol' batch blog of ours. I think it's time for a new face
life and perhaps even a batch logo? Anyways, I will refer to this matter with our
batch's 3 fellow IT reps - however, those with any suggestions on how to make
this blog more 'batch friendly' or might be skilled in blog layout editing and would
wish to contribute do let me know! :)

Dear all,

I have messaged you once about this already, but I'm not sure if you've received it. I apologise if you have not, I have been having troubles with my phone.

Please inform all your batchmates that if they eat in the canteen they have to clean up after themselves. This is because to bring down the price of the food the operators have decided to hire fewer workers, hence we all have to make the habit of cleaning up after ourselves (which really isn't anything more than placing our plates on the trolley and cabinets in the canteen). Thanks everyone for their hard work and future compliance to this. :)

On a related note, De Brio is planning to hire two student part time workers for the cafe in the library. The pay is RM 5 per hour, and the timing is from 9 AM to 5 PM. Those interested, please contact me at 016-2578-520 with your name, ID number and contact details. Please keep in mind that they will be hired by the owner of De Brio, not IMU.

Open Day money is coming, don't worry. Just a few issues I need to sort out. However, I would like to greatly apologise for this delay.

Warmest regards,
Zia Shah

  1. Eldwin, please go and take a video of at least one of the MOCK OSCEs, so that it can help the students in your batch as well as yourself to revise for EOS. Please look into this.

  2. Are we even allowed to do that? 0.o

    - I believe that the CSU videos they have posted on the I Drives are more than sufficient. After all, our mock OSCEs only consisted of specific sections of the ENTIRE P.E. that is shown in said videos. Moreover, I don't really think that we are allowed to do that. As far as what the lecturers say during the feedback session, own notes for own weaknesses should be noted.

    P.S. Starless.Promise - who is this again?

  4. Eldwin, thanks for posting up the music club updates!

as for the OSCE thing, the videos are not quite as efficient as it should be, but i personally feel that they're sufficient enough for you to PASS.
if you want an A, consult your seniors, and lecturers.

reason behind my comments are that...
taking a video will be not as helpful since you need an explanation for everything you do- a video will help to know the sequence of events and what they actually do- but not the theory behind it.

e.g. why do we need to do the palpitory method before the auscultatory method in BP? you see it being done, but if you don't know why, you might just forget it.
its actually not only to estimate the SBP, but to prevent misreading of SBP due to auscultatory gap - try googling it.

  5. i think we need tats to make a video for us.

    yes, seriously.
(who else has gotten more accumulated feedback from seniors + lecturers?)

theres too much inconsistencies in what the facis teach.
even the official csu videos have been criticised to be wrong by facis themselves, missing out steps, etc. same goes with the seniors guides from photocopy shop. its frustrating.

haha. thank you. i take that as a compliment...
however, i think that even if i make a video, it will be incomplete.

however, there are things that i can say with concrete proof...

Mcleod's Clinical Skills Book would provide somewhere along the lines of 70% of knowledge needed for CSU.
a strong knowledge in theory and logical thinking always helps in practical skills.

the little inconsistencies of facilitators, some of them are intentional (and merely personal preferences) and some are due to incompetence.

personally, the problem that i see is the opacity in the marking scheme.

It would be nice to be able to view the marking criteria of CSU exam, it is not impossible, as I hear from the PMS deans that some universiies (which i forgot which ones... can someone who went to AC help me out?) provide the "syllabus" which includes the marking criterias.

i'm thinking this COULD be made possible if we all give our feedback in the student satisfaction survey that "we want marking schemes"...

IMU may argue that our skills center guide is sufficient, but... from what i observed, not really.

some marking criteria (Dr.KA carries around a marking scheme when asked for assistance in CSU learning, so he shares some with students) are quite rigid, like

"student has to ask patient to press onto the hand to observe sternocleidomastoid, before palpating jugular chain"

well, but the marking scheme changes every year so i cannot say anything 100% though.

i believe everyone is eager to learn, but discouraged to do so because they don't know what is right and what is not, right?
